Often the most romantic things any couple can do is simply take a break from everyday life. Romantic getaways in South Africa are ideal for Valentine’s day, Anniversaries, Honeymoons. Birthdays also offer the perfect guilt-free excuse to getaway.
Take a short weekend break to bring back the spark, or go on a romantic roadtrip to some of the more faraway spots.
Romantic Weekend Getaways
If you just have the weekend, even a long weekend, you may find yourselves pressed for time. Spare the travel time and pick a city vacation for easy transport. We have some swoony cities in South Africa, oozing with romance and charm.
This city is full of love. It’s a warm and welcoming environment, full of sugar, spice, and everything nice. Durban has the most amazing sunrises, and nothing beats an early morning coffee on the beach.
If you aren’t early risers, a walk along the beach promenade is romantic at any time of the day. While you’re on the promenade you could enjoy a bike ride with one of the rented bikes. Or find a rickshaw and enjoy a trip around the beachfront as you sit and stare into each other’s eyes.
uShaka Marine World gives you the opportunity to go through the aquarium and see all the sea creatures, as well have a splashing time in the water park. The lazy river is the best way to get to know your date as you float by the seal, penguin and shark tanks.
There’s also the Botanical Gardens where you can enjoy a picnic, and if you’re lucky enough, a concert as well. An even more relaxing romantic idea is simply chilling at one of Durban’s Dams. These are great spots for some quiet, peaceful quality time with your love.
Ah, the mother city. The list of romantic things to do in Cape Town never seems to end. Whether you enjoy a wine tasting tour on one of the many wine farms, or a trip up to the top of Table Mountain in the cable car, this city has something for all.
The summer months in the city allow you special treats, like the Galileo Open Air Cinema, which gives you a long list of movies, from classic to cheesy and everything in between, these are all shown outside while you and your love get to cuddle under the stars.
Another fantastic way to spend a romantic day is a concert in Kirstenbosch Gardens, although these are mainly on Sundays, but even without the concert Kirstenbosch gardens offers a whimsical day out.
The V&A waterfront is a favourite among locals and tourists alike, offering food for every pallet, many live bands throughout the restaurants and the outdoor amphitheatre. Along the harbour there are boat rides and helicopter rides available, nothing screams romance like a sunset champagne cruise.
You could go for the adventurous romantic options and take a hike up Signal Hill or Lion’s Head, or do some paragliding around the city. Sun-downer cocktails overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with Robbin Island in the distance is the most romantic way to end off an adventurous date day.
Check out Flights to Cape Town
One of the most romantic places I found in Joburg was Monte Casino. I absolutely love walking through and enjoying the artistic décor.
My favourite place inside is Skoobs, the book store, and if you happen to be there while the piano is playing you have yourself a deep, intellectual, culturally-rich date – surrounded by books and drinking the best coffee in Joburg!
However, if your date doesn’t find books as romantic as I do, there are also fun things like bowling which is always a winner! Or you could have some old-school fun in the arcade.
You won’t run out of options on where to eat, and the cinema is so comfy and luxurious. You can also check out the bird park, or take a ride in the hot air balloon for a spectacular view.
Secluded Romantic Getaways
Romantic bush holidays are great for relationships. Spend some time in nature and enjoy each other’s company – undisturbed.
Here’s where you’ll find the widest range of honeymoon destinations in Gauteng. With gorgeous attractions and kilometres of undisturbed nature, this is the ultimate spot for a quiet break away.
There are many lodges, reserves, and farms which offer accommodation. These spots will not only provide a cozy atmosphere, comfy bed, and romantic feel; but many of them also have animals on the property, so you won’t have to go far for wildlife viewing.
Mountain lodges, horseback riding, and breathtaking landscapes are all part and parcel of romantic getaways in the Drakensburg, KZN. The stunning mountain range offers a break from the city, with ample opportunity to immerse yourself in raw natural beauty.
Have a look at Tranquility Farm for a secluded, yet luxurious stay.
There’s something so charming about the West Coast. Its stunning coastal views and gorgeous little towns along the road make it one of the most romantic getaways in South Africa!
There’s an abundance of game reserves along the R27, most of which offer romantic glamping accommodation. There are also some luxurious beachside resorts, for those who prefer sea views to views of giraffes and water buffalo.
Found from Plettenburg Bay all the way along the coast to Mossel Bay, the Garden Route is one of the best honeymoon destinations in South Africa.
Ok, so maybe I’m just biased after our stay in the Cliffhanger Cottages in Knysna.
There are plenty of tranquil lodges, bnbs, and even glamping options set in some if the most serene settings. The Garden Route is also home to many of the most unique places to stay in South Africa.
South Africa has many gorgeous, romantic places. These cities are the ones that I have been lucky enough to spend time in. Let me know in the comments where else you love going to, or what else you can do in these cities to celebrate your romance?
